For two years, the number of applications for registration of regional brands has grown by 65%

On the declaration of the Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Science, Education and Culture Liliya Gumerova, the number of applications filed for state registration of regional brands has increased by almost 65% since 2017. Since December 2017, 74 appellations of origin have been registered, and currently 232 appellations of origin have been registered in the Russian Federation. In the words of Gumerova, the popularity of regional products in Russia is growing, and it is important to protect consumers from low-quality products. Here, changes to the Civil Code of the Russian Federation, which will go into effect in July 2020, will be useful. They provide for introduction of a new object of intellectual property – «geographical indications», and determine the features of its legal protection.
